March 2014 traffic statistics

17/04/2014

Growth of +3% in the first quarter

Since the beginning of the year Bordeaux Airport has hosted more than 950,000 passengers and achieved 3% growth, even though figures for March were only slightly higher than in March 2013 (+0.4%). Despite the offering of seats being slightly down, the increase in the load factor of flights and the opening of new lines stabilised traffic in March. However, the strike by air traffic controllers on 18 March and the elections period which was less favourable to weekend travel, had a negative impact on traffic. In a rather gloomy context for all French airports, Bordeaux Airport posted the best traffic growth rate among the top 5 regional airports*.

Since the beginning of the year, scheduled domestic traffic (+2.3%) has benefited from a positive traffic volume increase for the main airport served, Paris Orly (+7.2%). The Charles de Gaulle hub (+1%) continued to grow during the quarter while flight frequencies were reduced from 6 to 5 at the end of 2013. The other two important lines in terms of volume were affected by the strike in March and recorded a slight decline over the quarter: Lyon -2.3% and Marseille -2.9%.

Scheduled international traffic has shown strong growth (+5%) since the beginning of 2014. In the first quarter, southern Europe posted good results: Lisbon (TAP and easyJet) +7.9%, Madrid (Iberia) +9.8%, Rome (Air France and Ryanair) +21.9% and Venice (Volotea) +28.1%. There were excellent performances from Geneva (easyJet) +14.3%, Charleroi (Ryanair) +34.2% and also Amsterdam (Air France/KLM) +18.5%.
Late March heralded the start of the new season, the launch of new scheduled lines** and the arrival of three new companies*** in Bordeaux.

Over the 3 months traffic with low-cost airlines continued to rise, with results of +13.5% (and +10.8% in March), a total of 300,000 passengers. Note that 180,000 passengers were transported by easyJet, confirming its strong growth (+10.6%).
