The history of Amman co-exists with that of humanity. The city was founded in approximately 6500 BC and was referred to as "Rabbath Ammon" in the Bible. Renamed Philadelphia by the Greeks, the city was conquered by the Romans followed by the Byzantines, who constructed the first church in the city. Circa 635 AD, the Islamic faith renamed it "Ammon", which later became "Amman" and in 1921, the city was chosen by King Abdallah as the capital of the new state of Jordan. Today, this major city, home to over 2 million inhabitants, thrives as a haven of peace at the heart of the Middle East. It has been extensively modernised with towers, luxury shops and wide avenues yet the authenticity of the original city still remains, with its ancient monuments, bustling streets and cafés, wherein dwells the heart and incredible hospitality of the eternal city of Amman.
The capital of the Hashemite kingdom, Amman's old town is home to some incredible monuments, such as the 2nd century Roman theatre and the forum with Corinthian columns, both flanked by the highest hill in the city. The citadel of Jabal al Qal'a and the temple of Hercules built by Marcus Aurelius stand on the summit of the hill. Many major historical sites are easily accessible from Amman, such as the Dead Sea which lends itself to bathing, or rather floating, due to the high salinity of the lake, situated just 1 ½ hours from Amman. Built by the Nabataeans, the incredible prehistoric city of Petra is just 3 hours from the capital and is worth an extensive visit. Deemed one of the new wonders of the world, more than 700 monuments are carved into the multicoloured sandstone cliffs. A little further south, why not take a four-wheel drive tour of Wadi Rum, the magnificent desert where Lawrence of Arabia once lived. The red cliffs are some of the oldest rocks in the world, dating back 30 million years. A night in an Arab tent in this unique environment makes for an unforgettable experience!
