Founded in 159 BC by Attalos II, the city formerly known as Attaleia, has experienced Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Known in Europe by the name Satalia during the Middle Ages, the city is now home to nearly 800,000 inhabitants, overlooks the Mediterranean and has a port known as Kaleici. With nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, the Southern Turkish city is renowned for its beaches and historical sites. The city's international airport has made it one of the Mediterranean's leading tourist destinations and the clear blue waters of its bay attract luxury ships and travellers from across the globe.
It's all about relaxation in Antalya. With beaches such as Lara, Adalar, Mermerli and Konyaalti, you can choose from either fine sand or pebbles, and will find water sports, scuba diving, sailing and kite surfing on your doorstep. The view of the Taurus mountains and islands of the bay are well worth taking a detour. The old town of Kaleici and the gate of the Roman emperor Hadrian, the symbol of the city, are also worth visiting, as is Yivli Minare, the minaret constructed in 1230 and the archaeology museum. From the old port, you can set out and discover the spectacular Duden Waterfalls, formed by the river which flows directly into the sea, while the nearby archaeological sites of Perge, Termessos and Side, with its excellent Roman theatre, will plunge you into ancient history. You are sure to truly appreciate the city at nightfall under the orange trees while enjoying a plate of Mezze, made up of deliciously spicy hot and cold appetizers, the perfect reflection of the city...
