Coming soon Situated to the south of the plain of Attica, the capital of Greece is steeped in ancient history yet also reveals Byzantine and Turkish influences. The city takes its name from the ancient Greek goddess, Athena, and is organised around four main districts - the ancient Pláka district (at the foot of the Acropolis), the stylish Kolonaki district, Monastiraki, with its abundance of antique dealers and Exarhia, the trendy student area. Known as Athinai in Greek, Athens is both the cultural and economic capital of Greece, stretching over a vast area which now includes the port of Piraeus to the South.
Two squares are essential for finding your bearings in Athens. From Omonoia Square, you can find your way to the nearby central market and archaeological museum, and from Syntagma Square you will catch sight of the Acropolis with the Parthenon, the Erectheion, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike. Athens has a warm, friendly atmosphere, and is the perfect place to sample authentic Greek dishes such as dolmathes, souvlaki or tzatziki and drinks such as ouzo and retsina, (the local wine) outside one of the many street cafés. Don't worry about getting lost in the city; you're bound to stumble across a treasure like the Byzantine church of Panaghia Kapnikarea in the Pláka district: this is the real side to Athens.
