On the map

Barcelona is Catalan in both body and spirit. With 1.7 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Spain and tenth largest urban area in Europe. Situated on the East coast of Spain overlooking the Mediterranean and sheltered by the mountains, the two thousand year old city is an integral part of Catalonia, of which it is the capital city. Ideally located for trade across Europe, Barcelona is Spain's leading economic region and also houses the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean. With the arrival of major events such as the World Fair and the Olympic Games, Barcelona's successive transformations and outstanding cultural abundance make it a unique destination for tourism that is in a league of its own.

Things to see and do

Barcelona is colourful and fiery. At the heart of the old town, the Ramblas pedestrian street leads from Catalunya Square down to the Christopher Columbus monument at the ancient port. You can't miss the incredible works of the architect, Gaudi, that are dotted around the city, including the unfinished Sagrada Familia, the Casa Pedrera, the Casa Batlló and the magnificent Parc Guell. Head for the Barceloneta beaches to catch some rays or visit the impressive Camp Nou football stadium. Art lovers will enjoy the Joan Miró Foundation art museum or the Picasso museum. However you choose to spend your time here, Barcelona will sweep you away into a land of magnificence and discovery.
