Coming soon Memphis at the time of the pharaohs, Babylon for the first Christians, Cairo derives its name from Al Qāhira, meaning ‘the victorious' in Arabic. Situated in the north of Egypt on the fertile banks of the life-giving Nile, the city has always been coveted and today still attracts many nationalities who help to make the Egyptian capital a prosperous, thriving city like no other on the African continent. Despite the high population density of the city, the people of Cairo are rightly known for their warm hospitality and good humour.
Cairo and Gizeh are one and the same! The gigantic, majestic pyramids watched over by the Sphinx form one of the most visited sites in the world. Misr, as the Egyptians themselves call it, offers a multitude of monuments in the centre of town. The Al-Fath Mosque with its coloured marble, and the Abdin Palace, the imposing former royal residence, are essential viewing. Also the Coptic quarter with its Roman towers, the Hanging Church and Ben Erza Synagogue. A little further on, the Islamic quarter has a host of mosques, each one as beautiful as the next, such as Al-Hakim, Mohammed Ali, Sultan Hassan, Ibn Touloun. Near El-Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum contains the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world. Finally, soak up all the vitality of the atmosphere of Cairo in its back streets, its markets and its scents.
