Situated in North East Morocco on the Atlantic coast, the city of Casablanca is so friendly that it is more often than not referred to by its popular local name of "Casa". With more than 5 million inhabitants, it is Morocco's largest city, the economic capital and second largest port. While Casablanca is undoubtedly a thriving tourist destination, it also boasts a successful air transport hub serving most other African capitals.
Formerly known as Anfa, Casablanca (which means "the white house" in Spanish) experienced prosperity at the beginning of the 20th century with the establishment of the modern port by Lyautey. Nowadays, Casablanca is a thriving city symbolic of Moroccan dynamism. As the industrial, economic and financial capital of the Kingdom, the city continues to prosper due to the activity of its port, its international airport and its modern infrastructures. Casablanca (or Dar El-Beïda in Arabic) also boasts the third largest hotel district in the country.
Modern Casablanca is still home to authentic edifices like the 16th century medina surrounded by fortified walls, while its unmissable Hassan II mosque opened in 1993 boasts a minaret tower reaching up to 200 metres high that that involved 10,000 workers in its construction. Due to its fantastic coastal location, Casablanca also offers the pleasures of the Atlantic Ocean which can be discovered from the coastal resort of Âïn-Diab, famous for its waves and ideal for surfing and kite-boarding. The city also boasts the second largest sports complex in the world, with a surface area of 22,000 m2 devoted to swimming pools, tennis courts, gymnasiums, and weight training and relaxation areas. Keen golfers can choose between the 9-hole Anfa golf course and the 18-hole Mohammedia Royal Golf Club which dates back to 1930.
