Heralded by Gustave Flaubert as the "island of golden sand", Djerba invites you to enjoy tranquility and well-being with fantastic weather conditions and turquoise waters, just two hours from Bordeaux. In South-East Tunisia, Djerba is no stranger to tourism and coastal developments, and its main attraction lies in its magical atmosphere combining relaxation, Mediterranean flavours and joie de vivre. Like Odysseus' sailors, you are sure to succumb to the charm of this haven of relaxation.
There is no doubt about the fact that Djerba is mentioned in the Odyssey by the name of the "Island of the Lotus-Eaters". Named by the Romans, the island is situated in South Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabes and has experienced significant tourist development since the 1960s, with the creation of an international airport and a wide range of hotel facilities. Despite this expansion, Djerba has succeeded in retaining its historical charm and palm tree-lined fine sand beaches on the East coast. The island enjoys a hot climate freshened by a sea breeze and offers a stunning backdrop of dazzling white buildings and deep blue sea waters enhanced by date palm trees, olive trees and cactuses to provide a destination that is out of this world.
Magnificent beaches are not Djerba's only attraction. The island is also home to several unspoilt villages of square-shaped houses adorned in white and blue, such as Houmt Souk, the island's capital, where you can take advantage of a full range of water activities such as golf, tennis and kite boarding in particular.... or simply devote your time to relaxing! Djerba also boasts a host of historical treasures, such as Roman archaeological sites at Henchir Bourgou, Ghizen and Meninx, the underground mosques of El Bardaoui and Sidi Zayed, and a network of fortified strongholds. The largest of these is Borj El K'bir to the North of Houmt Souk, constructed in the 15th century. Renowned as the place where original manuscripts of Jewish law were discovered and the symbol of Djerbian tolerance, the Ghriba synagogue located at Er-Riadh is also worth a visit.
