Heralded as the pearl in the Adriatic and listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Dubrovnik is a true gem. Known historically as Ragusa, the city was severely damaged during the war but has since recovered and gone on to become a highly popular tourist destination. The fortified city walls and sharp narrow streets of the medieval city give it a distinctly Mediterranean feel, with a spirit that is somewhere between Slavic and Latin. From the subtle blue of the Adriatic Sea to the red rooftops of the ancient city, the playwright Bernard Shaw was absolutely right when he deemed it "paradise on Earth", as Dubrovnik is simply out-of-this-world.

Coming soon At the southernmost point on the coast of Croatia, the port of Dubrovnik basks in the glistening reflection of the Adriatic Sea. Founded in the 7th century, the former Ragusa was a thriving city of multiple influences. After being bombarded during the civil war in 1991, the city was restored and rebuilt, and is now a major tourist destination with an established reputation and home to 45,000 inhabitants.
Dubrovnik is an architectural gem like no other in the world. A stroll along the city walls dating back to the Middle Ages allows you to discover the fascinating old town from on high and appreciate the breathtaking view over the Adriatic sea. The main pedestrian street known as Placa and picturesque Loggia square with its countless monuments and palace are not to be missed. Dubrovnik also boasts crystal clear waters with an average temperature of 23°C.
Additional ideas:
- Dubrovnik's summer festival takes place throughout July and August, playing host to up to 2,000 international artists with shows, plays and concerts in the old town.
- A tour of the nearby islands on one of the traditional Karaka boats originally used to transport cargo but now adapted for carrying tourists.
