The capital of the Algarve situated in southern Portugal, Faro is a haven of peace and leisure. Despite being severely impacted by an earthquake in 1755, the city has managed to preserve many of its beautiful historical monuments, such as the Roman battlements. Now a major tourist destination, the coastal resort of Faro boasts 7 kilometres of beaches, a large bird reserve, no less than 19 golf courses and gastronomy of renown, rendering it an exclusive tourist destination. The warm, sunny city of Faro is sure to astound you...
A major commercial port in Roman times, Faro owes its name to the Moorish family of Ibn-Harun, a local governor during the 11th century. The city fire instigated by the Earl of Essex in 1596 and the earthquake of 1755 did not succeed in destroying monuments such as the Roman battlements and the cathedral. The 2nd largest student city in Portugal, Faro is now a major centre for tourism thanks to its mild climate, beautiful beaches lapped by clear waters and typically Portuguese way of life. Situated just 7 kilometres from the city centre, Faro international airport is the 2nd largest in Portugal after that of the capital of Porto; however the Algarve remains the most visited region in Portugal.
In Faro and the Algarve, you're spoilt for choice! Basking in the sun in southern Portugal, the city's characterful old town has retained much of its original charm, with monuments such as the Sé cathedral, parts of which date back as far as the 13th century, the beautiful cobbled square of the largo de Sé and the Arco de Vila, the 17th century gateway to the city. White houses and azulejo tile work can also be spotted throughout the city. For a spot of relaxation, head to the magnificent beaches of fine sand lapped by crystal clear warm waters which await you just 7 kilometres from the city. Sport lovers can take advantage of the 19 golf courses while nature lovers will be thrilled with the Ria Formosa nature park, a haven of peace which lends itself well to bird watching, stretching over 18,400 hectares of lagoons which can be explored on foot. Finally, the delicious specialities of the Algarve include dishes which focus on seafood, fish, vegetables and natural citrus fruits - the final attraction to clinch your decision to visit Faro in the Algarve.
