On the map

The Madeira archipelago has existed since ancient times but was rediscovered by the Portuguese who founded Funchal, its capital city. Madeira in fact consists of two main islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, and a multitude of smaller islands. Nowadays, the archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal and is home to just over 200,000 inhabitants, who are mostly resident in Funchal. Perched on a mountainside, with its charming houses and vivid green gardens, the city slopes gently down to the Atlantic Ocean. Supported by the expansion of its airport and a diverse range of hotel facilities, Funchal has become an iconic tourist destination for its rich historical heritage and temperate climate.

Things to see and do

Funchal is a fantastically green city. The capital of the archipelago is dotted with colourful gardens, which is not surprising for an island as natural and undeveloped as Madeira. The Lusitanian architecture with its impressive gilded churches and famous Azulejos tilework and the narrow, cobbled streets of the zona velha (old town) winding down to the port, are also sure to seduce visitors to the island. The island offers an abundance of aromas and interestingly takes its name from the word "funcho" (meaning fennel).
A trip to Funchal would not be complete without taking the time to explore further afield. The beaches in small harbours tucked away in secret, unspoilt coves, the indescribable colours of the sub-tropical forests, the staggering panoramas from the heights of the mountains and clifftops such as Cabo Girão, and the spectacular beaches of Calheta and Ribeira Brava are just some of the must-see attractions of this island that will not fail to impress.
