Coming soon At the junction between the mountains of the Jura and Haute Savoie, Geneva enjoys a central location in Europe making it is less than 2 hours from the major European capitals. Founded by the Romans, the town was subject to the influence of the Reformation which brought with it French and Italian Protestant refugees. The city of Rousseau and Voltaire and birthplace of the Red Cross, Geneva has remained resolutely cosmopolitan to the present day, with foreign residents accounting for 40% of its total population of 188,000. An important global conference centre and the seat of more than two hundred international organisations such as the UN, the WTO and the UNHCR, Geneva naturally revolves around commerce and exchange.
One of the symbols of Geneva is the largest water fountain in Europe, a spectacular sight out in the lake and a landmark for many visitors. Walking around the lake, visiting the old town, the Maison Tavel museum, the Place Neuve and the Reformers' Wall, with Farel, Calvin, Théodore de Bèze and Knox, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Geneva. You could take an excursion to Mont Salève, the town at its foot or the nearby Alps. The ski resorts of Chamonix Mont Blanc and the Portes du Soleil are within easy reach of the city, or you could follow your guide along the Geneva Wine Route with its 1,400 hectares of vineyards. Geneva and its region also boast top music venues, particularly world-renowned Victoria Hall, plus the Swiss Romande Orchestra or events such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, less than an hour from Geneva airport.
