On the map

As the former capital of Brittany, Nantes is situated at the entrance to the Loire estuary, 60 kilometres from Saint-Nazaire, a town with which the city is united. Owing its prosperity in some degree to the maritime trade of the 17th century, Nantes is today one of the most dynamic urban areas in the whole of France. A leading national hub for ship-building, the second largest centre of activity for Airbus and for the French agri-food market after Rungis near Paris, the city is also very much turned towards the service sector. Its youthful population (two thirds of inhabitants are under 40 years of age) is highly appreciative of the city's urban culture geared towards street drama and events of international calibre.

Things to see and do

At the crossroads between the Loire Valley, Brittany and Atlantic Ocean, Nantes has received a wealth of heritage from its colourful history. Traces can still be seen today at the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, the cathedral and Feydeau Park. Labelled as a "green" city, it is home to countless parks such as the famous botanical garden and the Japanese-inspired Île de Versailles garden. With major events such as the classical music festival Les Folles Journées attracting up to 120,000 spectators, the city is at the forefront in cultural innovation. Likewise, the Royal de Luxe theatre company draws crowds to its highly acclaimed modern puppet show with giant puppets. If you're looking for stunning beaches, look no further than those at La Baule, Pornichet and Le Pouliquen, less than an hour from the city centre. Nature lovers can enjoy walks along the banks of the Loire or discover the increasingly popular Wine Route stretching as far as Clisson.
