Coming soon Nestled in the magnificent gulf of Conca d'Oro in western Sicily on the North coast, the sparkling city of Palermo lies between the Mediterranean Sea and a backdrop of white hills. Its strategic position is one of the main reasons behind its colourful past. Founded by the Phoenicians, the city was subsequently conquered by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swedes, French, Spanish and even the Austrians, with architectural and artistic traces of all these influences still remaining to this day. Having shaken off its reputation as a city of organised crime, Palermo is home to more than 700,000 inhabitants. The city is currently undergoing a major regeneration programme while continuing to develop its tourist sector, with more than 4 million passengers passing through its international airport each year.
The marvellous, multi-faceted city of Palermo offers a multitude of monuments and places of interest. Many of them are globally unique, displaying influences from North Europe and Africa throughout the ages. The staggering wealth of architecture is exhibited in buildings such as Zisa Castle (Al-Aziz in Arabic) with its Arab-Norman style, the Cathedral of Palermo built in the 12th century on the site of an ancient mosque, the Palazzo dei Normanni and the famous monastery of catacombs. The city has plenty of squares, fountains and colourful markets that will plunge you headfirst into an array of sensational flavours, like those at Ballaro and Capo. To escape from the Sicilian heat, cool down on the Mondello beach located 11 kilometres out of town or visit the abbey at Monreale with its delightful garden and fountains, at just 8 kilometres away. From the shade of the cloister's porphyry columns, you can truly appreciate this haven of peace.
