Touch down on the paradise island just 2 hours after leaving Bordeaux and make the most of the city's round-the-clock lifestyle.
The capital city of the Balearic Islands, Palma has always been a coveted location. The city has been captured and subsequently shaped by its successive conquerors - the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs and Aragonese - giving it an individual architectural style. The present-day Catalan city is brimming with modern monuments and cultural activity, playing host to countless international festivals, concerts and exhibitions. Palma also offers visitors an array of sports activities - water sports enthusiasts and hikers are especially welcome on the island which has turned its back on its former tacky industrial tourism. The city and bay of Palma is now emerging as a fresh, stylish destination offering historical villages, gastronomy and an unspoilt environment throughout the year.
The magnificent cathedral overlooking the sea is symbolic of Palma's charm. Built between 1221 and 1601 and known as Le Seu, the enchanting and majestic structure displays a main door adorned with Gothic detail and 9 bells in its tower. Not far from here lies the Palace of Almudaina, a former Moorish castle and palace for the Majorcan kings, now a summer residence for the royal family. It's also worth a short detour to see the only remaining trace of Moorish civilisation, the Arab baths on Ca'n Serra Street and the Gothic cloister of the Basilica of Saint Francesc. Fish and sea food feature heavily on Palma's menus and don't forget to try the traditional regional sausage, sobrassada, made from minced pork, red pepper and paprika, to be enjoyed with bread. And to sample some food of a more spiritual nature, head for the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the home of the famous Catalan artist or the Centre Es Baluard museum of modern and contemporary art, home to a rich collection of works created by the likes of Picasso, Magritte and Giacometti.
