Pula

Home to 60,000 inhabitants, the ancient city of Pula is situated in the North of Croatia on the Istria peninsula by the Adriatic Sea. Dating back to Roman times, the city's remarkable relics have stood the test of time. Across the water from Venice, the small port welcomes thousands of tourists each year, drawn by the magical islands and stunning beaches of the unspoilt, authentic region of Istria.

Point of reference

Founded by the Greeks, the capital city of Istria was the summer residence of General Tito during the Yugoslavian era. In 177 BC, the Romans settled there and constructed several remarkable buildings. Subsequently under Byzantine rule, Pula was later conquered by its powerful Adriatic neighbour Venice, in 1150. The city was thereafter subject to both Austro-Hungarian and Italian control, and later became the capital of Istria in post-war Yugoslavia, as well as a trade port and popular destination for the chief leaders of the Soviet regime. Nowadays, Pula prospers from its thriving tourist development thanks to its large hotel district and international airport serving many connections.
