The city of Bordeaux is located within the heart of one of the world’s largest wine regions (110,000 hectares) and sits right next to Europe's largest cultivated forest. Known as “Les Landes” (1,700,000 hectares), it is bordered by 220km of Atlantic coastline, accessible within a 2h-drive from the Pyrenees mountains and the Lascaux Caves in Dordogne.

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region offers over 220km of Atlantic coastline and is the perfect destination to enjoy water sports such as surfing, for which the region is best-known. Just an hour's drive from Bordeaux, the Bay of Arcachon offers authentic charm and breathtaking views. To enjoy them, visitors can climb to the top of the famous Dune of Le Pilat.

Since 2007, Bordeaux has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a prestigious international listing that rewards the city's beauty and adornment. The historic city centre offers a rich variety of cultural treasures sure to delight art and history lovers.

Bordeaux is the #1 worldwide region for producing AOC wines. Did you know that a bottle of Bordeaux wine is sold every 21 seconds throughout the world? This performance has earned the city a museum dedicated to this specific cultural heritage. The gorgeous Dordogne region with its authencity and undisputable charm is just a two-hour drive from Bordeaux. With its lush natural landscapes and the richness of its culture, the Dordogne is a fantastic place to get away from the buzz of the city. The region’s valley, full of hidden jems, is ranked second most popular French destination (right behind Paris) according to tourists voting for the “European Best Destination 2021” competition.

A highly-recommended region

After being awarded the best European tourist destination, Bordeaux was granted the status of best autumnal trip by The Telegraph and classified as the top destination to visit by the New York Times, it was also voiced as a must-see travel destination by Chinese travel agencies. In line with its ever-increasing recognition worldwide, it is worth remembering too that in 2017, Bordeaux again stood in the top-ranking destinations to visit, ahead of Cape Town and Los Angeles to Lonely Planet’s title of City of the year.

Today, 20 cities located in all continents of the planet have signed a “twin-city”, a partnership or a cooperation agreement with Bordeaux. These are:
