5 good reasons to go to Marseille

Take a look at the city’s stunning heritage
Take a look at the city’s stunning heritage
Founded by the Greeks, “Massilia’s” fascinating heritage can be seen in many of Marseille’s iconic districts, including Canebière, Vieux-Port and Panier. Take a walk past the Maison Diamantée (diamond house), Vieille-Charité cultural centre, the luxury Hôtel-Dieu, and Notre-Dame de la Garde Cathedral. More recently, the velodrome and Corbusier-designed Cité Radieuse building are worth a visit.
Idyllic beaches and coves
Idyllic beaches and coves
When you booked a flight to Marseille, did you ever imagine you’d be basking on Mediterranean beaches? There’s a huge range of beaches to choose from, including secret coves and sandy bays. Prado, Estaque and Malmousque are just some of the many places where you can sunbathe or go for a swim. Head out on a hike along the rocky coastline and enjoy a dive into turquoise-blue waters.
Stroll through stunning parks

Need a breath of fresh air? In Marseille, there are lots of idyllic parks where you can take time out in the shade. Many parks, such as Parc François-Billoux and Jardin de Magalone, surround beautiful, old buildings. Whatever you do, don’t forget to visit Parc Borély and the park surrounding Palais Longchamp.
Unbelievable museums
Unbelievable museums
Marseille is clearly very proud of its history and culture and is home to a number of museums. Why not visit the History Museum, Mediterranean Archaeology Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, or the African, Oceanic and Native American Art Museum. And whatever you do, don’t forget to stop by the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MUCEM) which overlooks the entrance to the harbour.
Try some Southern-French cuisine
Try some Southern-French cuisine
Foodies will love Marseille cuisine which has a real Southern-French feel. Bouillabaisse (a type of fish stew), aïoli (garlic mayonnaise) and anchoïade (anchovy dip) are some of the locals’ favourites. Daube Provençale, a type of beef stew, also has lots of admirers. There are also plenty of fabulous, sweet treats such as the popular Navette biscuits and Pompe à Huile (olive oil brioches).

Culture and history

Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica

Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica

The cathedral is nicknamed the “Bonne Mère” (Good Mother) and from the top of the hill, it watches over Marseille and its seafarers.  Early on, the cathedral’s strategic position was used to maintain control over the harbour. However, the current building wasn’t constructed until half-way through the 19th century. Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica was built in a Roman-Byzantine architectural style, which was very fashionable at the time. The interior is beautifully decorated with mosaics and gilding.

The unmissable MUCEM museum

Opened in 2013, the MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) is so much more than a museum. The MUCEM museum embraces history, art and archaeology and also holds cultural events. The museum has three different cultural spaces: Fort Saint-Jean, the J4 Building and Belle de Mai Centre. These spaces host a range of conferences, shows and exhibitions.

Calanques National Park

Calanques National Park

Marseille wouldn’t be Marseille without its rocky, little coves. A series of rocky inlets cut into the coastline all the way to Cassis. There are a number of hiking routes along the coast as well as divine little creeks where you can stop for a quick dip. If you enjoy walking, you need to climb up Mont Puget, which boasts unrivalled views over the Mediterranean and Frioul Islands. If you’d like to visit Château d’If, you can access the islands by boat.

Outings

Head to Vieux-Port

Head to Vieux-Port

The Old Port is the true heart of the city. The bar and restaurant terraces there are set out to make the most of the Mediterranean sun and uninterrupted views. If you want to sample some of the city’s best food, then take a wander down some of the side streets. That’s where the best restaurants are hidden.

Les Docks Village

Shopaholics will simply adore Les Docks Village. The area’s old warehouse buildings have been renovated to create a lively hub for shopping and eating. Now there are brand new boutiques, restaurants and a marketplace. You won’t find the outlets here anywhere else as the vendors have been selected and there aren’t any high-street chains.

Gastronomy

There are plenty more fish in the sea!

There are plenty more fish in the sea!

Bouillabaisse (fish stew) is Marseille’s most popular dish. It was originally made by the families of fishermen, using fish that hadn’t been sold. Bouillabaisse can be made with red mullet, sea bream, scorpion fish, john dory and other types of fish too. Bouillabaisse is served with potatoes, croutons and rouille (a garlic and saffron sauce).

Aïoli, a typically Southern dish

Another popular dish on restaurant menus is aïoli. Aïoli is garlic mayonnaise served with a nice plate of fish (often cod), boiled eggs and vegetables such as green beans, carrots and cauliflower. Aïoli is both the name of the mayonnaise and the name of the dish.
