Point of reference

In the west of central Scotland, on the River Clyde, Glasgow was founded by Saint Mungo in the 6th century, but really boomed in the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century thanks to shipbuilding, textiles and the steel industry. Huge projects at the end of the 20th century helped it to shake off its reputation as an industrial town. With two international airports and a metro, it is the 3rd biggest city in the United Kingdom and the main port in Scotland and knows how to show itself at its best. European Capital of Culture in 1990, and of Sport in 2003, it will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Named UNESCO City of Music in 2008, Glasgow boasts a renowned orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, but also various rock bands such as Simple Minds, Franz Ferdinand, and Texas, and is the birthplace of Angus Mackinnon, the guitarist from AC/DC.
