“Gateway to the world” is how Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, and above all the third largest port city in Europe, likes to describe itself. The former trade city has become a hive of international economic activity but has remained very green, lulled by the waters of the Elbe and the Alster and situated 110km from where the Elbe flows into the North Sea. With a thriving culture, boat trips and its typical districts, visitors are quickly won over by this beautiful maritime city and its varied history.

Point of reference

"Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg”: the city’s real name is a perfect summary of its rich history as a European trade city. Partially destroyed during World War II, Hamburg quickly bounced back and today the city and its urban area are home to more than 3.5 million residents. Hamburg is the 3rd biggest European port city and sees a large amount of container shipments, from which a thriving industry has grown whose key sectors include trade, chemistry, aeronautics, shipbuilding and biotechnology. With over 10 million visitors, tourism is one of the city’s major assets, and it is home to a number of different communities which contribute to its international character. Last but not least Hamburg is one of the liveliest European cultural centres with multiple museums, a famous opera house and music venues that have hosted The Beatles, Ray Charles and Jimmy Hendrix.
