Flights departing from Bordeaux to Catania

Catania and Etna are two sides of the same coin. Sicily’s second-largest city, located on the eastern side of the island, gets all its rich character and vitality from Europe’s biggest active volcano. Destroyed by it many times, Catania owes its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Baroque architecture to the volcano. The economic capital of Sicily was founded by the Greeks and boasts a very special charm, with its port close to the city centre, nearby beaches of black sand and ubiquitous black volcanic stone used in many of its monuments. Catania is also an ideal base for exploring the ancient monuments of Syracuse and Taormina, as well as mighty Etna itself.

Point of reference

The history of Catania is inextricably linked to that of the Mediterranean world and Etna. Founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC, the city was controlled by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Bourbons, Angevins, Aragonese, Spanish and Italians at different times – all of whom were attracted by its idyllic setting on the Ionian Sea and the fertility of its land enriched by the volcano. According to legend, Ulysses himself stayed there once. These days, Catania – capital of the province of the same name – is thoroughly modern. Its international airport, which is the biggest on the island, metro system and various seaport connections make it the beating economic heart of Sicily, while its overall population of more than 500,000 makes it Sicily’s second-largest metropolitan area, after Palermo.
