Frankfurt is Germany's modern and visionary financial capital. A major European business hub, the city is home to Europe's third largest airport. Known as 'Mainhattan' due to the many skyscrapers in the city's business district, the influence of the fifth largest city in Germany extends over a region containing over 5 million inhabitants. Its historical centre was partially rebuilt after the war, and this, along with its many museums and shops, makes it a pleasant place to live. Frankfurt is also one of the biggest European airline hubs, with links to Asia and South America.

Point of reference

According to legend, Frankfurt, literally the 'ford of the Franks', owes its beginnings to Charlemagne in 794. Almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War, the city was rebuilt and resumed its position as a financial leader. Alongside the headquarters of almost 400 banks based in the city, including the European Central Bank (ECB) and the German Federal Bank, Frankfurt is also home to the German stock exchange. This prosperity has given rise to the large number of skyscrapers in the Innenstadt district, nicknamed 'Mainhattan' in reference to the river Main that flows through. With its pedestrian zone and omnipresent green spaces, Frankfurt is an attractive and pleasant city that's highly popular with visitors.
