Madrid, city of sun, capital city, royal city... Welcome to one of the most beautiful European capitals. This Castilian city in the centre of the country and at the heart of the Movida always seems to be bustling, day and night. Warm, welcoming Madrid is the meeting point of several worlds, both historically and artistically. It is all less than 2 hours from Bordeaux, and offers the best gateway to the whole South American continent.
Point of referenceMadrid has always been multinational. Virtually in the centre of Spain, it was founded by Emir Mohammed I in 880, from whom it derived its name Machra source of water and it abundance. Reconquered by the Christians in 1083, it welcomed both religions happily. Philip II of Hapsburg made it his capital in 1561. The Bourbons also ruled Spain, before giving way to Napoleon. In the 20th century the Civil War, won by the Nationalists, put General Franco in power for nearly 40 years until the return of democracy in 1977 and the renewal of the Movida movement. Madrid has since rediscovered its international influence, marked by the construction of the largest terminal in the world at Barajas airport, with a capacity for 70 million passengers a year. But Madrid stands out above all as a city with a festive and modern reputation, a true beacon of the renewal of Spanish culture.
