Riga

Riga earned itself a charming nickname in the inter-war period: “the Paris of the North”. This highlights just how Latvia’s capital enchants its visitors with its unique array of architectural styles, from Art Nouveau to buildings which date back to the Middle Ages. With just 1.2 million inhabitants living in the urban areas, this port city is located just a stone’s throw away from the North Sea and for many centuries has been an important intersection not only for other Baltic countries, but also for Sweden, Russia and Finland. This has given the city a truly cosmopolitan, welcoming feel. Before regaining independence in 1991, Riga’s history was also influenced by Germany and Russia. The city is the ideal starting point to discover the amazing preserved spaces in Jūrmala, including beaches and pine forests. What’s more, the price of public transport and local restaurants alike is extremely reasonable.

Point of reference

Riga takes its name from the River Ridzene, which flows into the Daugava. In 1201, the city was officially founded on the shores of the gulf of the same name. The Baltic-German peoples contributed to its prosperity, followed by Polish, Swedish and Russian populations. In 1918, the Latvian Republic won its independence and Riga naturally became the capital. Following this, the country experienced Soviet domination until 21 August 1991, when Latvia returned. The history of Riga and the Latvian nation are closely linked. The country’s religious influences can be observed in the churches, temples and synagogues there. Despite being the biggest city in the Baltic States, Riga is still on a human scale. Its historical center, made up of an exquisite array of Art Nouveau-style buildings, was registered in Europe as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1997. Riga was also elected the European Capital of Culture for 2014. Riga has also seen a significant increase in its economic activity since it joined the EU. Its port, airport and industrial production all central to business and trade in Northern Europe.
